Character Descriptions - The Wizard of Oz

(please note that several of these characters can be cast with either gender, including all leads). 

 

Character age is flexible- this is a fantasy show!
 

DOROTHY GALE: female, 16-late 20s. (Mezzo/Mix) Kansas girl, earnest, expressive, and strong-willed, in search of something more. Very strong singer who moves well.

​

HUNK / SCARECROW:  Plucky and clever in a pinch, even while lacking a brain. Strong actor with an honest quality. Strong mover – acrobatic skills a bonus. Strong singer.

​

HICKORY / TIN MAN:  Desperate for a heart. A kind-hearted romantic. Sings and moves well.

​

ZEKE / COWARDLY LION: A mix of bravado and cowardice. Should move well. Excellent comic timing. Good singer.

​

ALMIRA GULTCH / WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST: female, 25-60. Character villain with an over-the-top stage presence. Excellent comic actress, has a killer cackle. Non-Singing but will be part of the ensemble also.

​

PROFESSOR MARVEL / THE WIZARD: male, 50-65. Older father figure with an eccentric flair. Non-Singing but will be part of the ensemble also.

​

GLINDA: female 20-45 (Soprano). Glinda is the Good Witch of the North. Benevolent and beloved. Strong singer.

​

TREES/WINKIES / FLYING MONKEYS / OZIANS / ADULT MUNCHKINS/POPPIES/SNOW:  The adult

chorus of the show, with featured speaking/vocal/dancing roles available. Singing and movement required. ​

​

AUNT EM: female, 30-60. Aunt Em is demanding, but loves her niece. Non-Singing but will be part of the ensemble also.

​

UNCLE HENRY: male, 40-60. Dorothy’s pleasant uncle. Non-Singing but will be part of the ensemble also. 

​

EMERALD CITY GUARD:  Strong comic actor, big presence. Will be part of the ensemble also.

​

MUNCHKINS/FEATURED MUNCHINKS: The  people of Munchkinland. Long oppressed, and

happy to be freed, the Munchkins will  be played by children and adults.  There are some featured roles among the munchkins, such as The Coroner,The Lollipop Guild, and The Lullaby League.

​

We will also be casting an actor to be the puppeteer for Toto.​
